  30. (1) I don't think it is worth trying to run latex209 and latex2e simultaneously.
  31. There just isn't a standard LaTeX209 to start with.
  32. I don't know where one would get Lamport's original LaTeX if one wanted it.

  34. So what exactly do people mean by LaTeX209?

  36. (2) I've found that LaTeX2e works perfectly with little or no trouble,
  37. particularly if one uses Karl Berry's ls-R database.
  38. This means that it doesn't really matter too much where one puts files,
  39. as long as they are below /usr/local/lib/texmf (or whatever).
  40. I just store the new LaTeX stuff in /usr/local/lib/texmf/tex/latex
  41. and unpack base.tar.gz from this directory.
  42. Similarly I unpack adobe.tar.gz in /usr/local/lib/texmf/fonts/metrics .
  43. This isn't really right, as the fd files should go in TEXINPUTS.
  44. But that doesn't matter with ls-R in place.

  46. (3) I can't help feeling that Karl and many others
  47. are inventing problems that just don't exist.
  48. The energy spent worrying about how to allow
  49. latex and latex209 to exist side-by-side
  50. would be much better spent making all the latex209 packages
  51. work with the new LaTeX.
  52. (They nearly all do anyway;
  53. and I imagine it would be a trivial matter to change the rest.)
